List Servs

http://ideanet.doe.state.in.us/

Both my list servs came from this website. The first is ICN – International Counseling Network. This is a large network of school and mental health counselors. I have subscribed but have not heard from them yet. It is always helpful to network with others in your field and also to find out what other states are doing.

The second list serv from this site is the School to Work listserv from the University of Minnesota. This serv promotes discussion and info sharing on topics of school to work. We have a school to work committee in our district so I felt this would be a good listserv. I have not heard from them as of yet

Telecollaborative
Projects

 http://edweb.sdsu.edu/people/

This project is geared for middle and high school students. They can collaborate with a doctor who is the head of counseling at San Diego State Univ. Kids can learn about cultural diversity, culture shock, and self esteem. This could be used as a counseling tool for student groups.

Several of the sites I checked out were not working. After LOTS of searching, this was the only one that I could find that was relevant to my job.

Search Tools

 http://www.collegebot.com

This is a neat tool to search for colleges, financial aid, and scholarships. You enter data that you are looking for in a school and it generates a list of schools that would be appropriate for you.

http://www.educationplanet.com

This web site has a link for counselors which then provides various links for peer counseling, college info, scholarships, and resources for counselors. It also contains lesson plans and ideas to propose with students.

http://www.collegenet.com/

This site is larger than collegebot. In fact, it contains a link for collegebot. This sites allows students to search for colleges, find out about scholarships and financial aid and also has a recruiting tool. Students can fill out a profile and college recruiters can search for them. Very cool! However, there is a fee. Depending on the information students get back, it may or may not be worth the fee.

Lesson Plan

LessonPlans.html

This site contains lessons plans for a careers class or unit for high school students. It is very informative – it lays out objectives, materials needed by both students and teacher, teachers strategies, and tips on keeping the students on task. It would be very useful for a career class.

  http://www.marblehead.com/guidance/

This is a high school web page with internet lesson plans for grades 9-12. It has a different lesson plan for each grade and they all focus on career exploration. The freshmen lesson starts with study skills and basic career searches. As the students advance, so do the searches. It contains many links to interest inventories, personality tests, and career sites.

Data Sets or
Online Tools

 http://www.careerbuilder.com

This site contains a salary wizard. This tool could be used by students to find out starting salaries in various careers.Students put in the career they are interested in as well as the city they are looking for and it generates a salary range in that area. It is a great way for them to get an idea of what kind of money they will be making.
